Butt art & colorectal cancer screening July 29, 2007

When you are over age 50, you get a special envelope at the Dr’s office.  Yes, that’s right.  It’s your 3 day sample packet of smear slides.  No, I won’t go into graphic details.  It’s important for you to “Just Do it!” My hubby and I had a hilarious conversation while walking our dog and cleaning up after her, about how to use the paper and sticks that accompany your special envelope.  Here’s a tip from me: break the sticks in half!  OK?

A relative has a license plate that says Cud B Wurs.  When I took care of my part of the screening recently, I had to remind myself- yes- it could be worse than this.  Much worse. You could have the job of examining this type of slide all day everyday.  You could have the disease.  You could be Katie Couric and have a colonoscopy on TV. (No thanks.) Or you could have been fired from your job as an art teacher in a Chesterfield County Public HS for using your derrier/tush for “butt prints” and selling them on the internet using an anonymous nickname. (Please do not get me started on possible nicknames!) Stephen Murmur was fired in 2007.  If you want to delve into the particulars of his”case”, Go to Google, and type in poop report or his name.   I bet the ACLU is having a field day!

This is serious business and I am not trying to make light of it.  When you get your mail-in envelope, do not be surprised when you see the biohazard symbol .  Just Do It! And think about butt-art as you smear. Remember— Cud B Wurs!

There are numerous new words, slang expressions and bumper stickers people have created that just make me giggle. Others are of a more serious nature.

Here’s one: Fund Education, not War! (Think of the money we could have put into … so many other worthwhile endeavors.)

I’m saving the funny ones for later. Tune in.

Cleavage July 29, 2007

Maybe I am showing my age, but teachers do not need to show cleavage to students.  Save that shirt for after school!  This is my # 1 pet peeve about “the younger” generation of teachers.  Please cover it up and save it for your friends; not your students.  It is distracting and unnecessary.  Consider the 5th grade boy who is distracted anyway…………( I purposely did not put in a graphic here!)

E.D.? July 29, 2007

Git yur mind outta the gutter!

I am talking about the Emotionally Disabled— not erectile dysfunction. puleez~~~~~~~

Having been an educator for numerous years, I have met my share of interesting students, parents and administrators. I have taught Kindergarten, Grade 2-3 and elementary library pre-K - 5th grade in addition to Head Start, pre-school and as a one-on-one special ed. asst.

One of my former parents is in jail for murdering a new freshman at VCU a few Labor Day weekends ago.  Yes, that’s right, I had parent conferences with this guy. Creepy back then and I’m glad he is now incarcerated.  So sad for his daughters though.  They live out of state.

I’ve taught an undiagnosed student with Aspberger’s Syndrome or possibly Autism.  He was a flapper.  Cute kid; mom in denial.

One administrator I used to work with was fired for going off to get her nails done during the school day and bringing her yappy dog to school each day.  She did not want to know about a fellow teacher cheating (pointing to answers) on a standardized test. She is now a real estate agent.

This past year, I met a student who was in 4th grade and did not read and was proud of it.  I asked him if he wanted to learn how to drive a car and he said sassily, “Of course”! I said, “Well you need to know how to read to drive a car. ” He just glared at me. I hope he will learn to read before he is incarcerated.

I may share a few more true stories.  These are the more current highlights of my life in schools. Not all of these people are E.D., by the way. Just commenting and not mentioning names, dates or places.

My new S-i-L (M) alerted me to a cool blog of some vendors I saw at ALA in DC a few weeks ago.   Check it out and see “The Pink Cadillac” and “Glitteracy”.  My brain is already in creative gear!  Thanks M!

Daniel Powter’s song…” Bad Day” July 6, 2007

Recently, I heard this song on the car radio to and from work.  My commute was less than 10 minutes. Was it an omen?  I love to hum along.  Life is short!  Keep that in mind!  Have a great day and be grateful!

(When I learn how to add an mp3 link , I will ASAP!- if it is legal by copyright standards. ;-)

Ice cream July 6, 2007

Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month and July 15, 2007  is National Ice Cream Day!? One of our daughters, works at a national chain and is following in my scooping steps.  It’s a great summer job.

Here are several ”cool” sites to explore!

http://www.benjerry.com/scoop_shops/factory_tour/

http://www.ice-cream-recipes.com/index.htm

http://www.giffords.com/giffords_history/giffords_history.cfm

Did you know that you can go on a virtual ice cream tour of the Ben and Jerry’s factory by clicking the first link in the above list?  If you explore the site, you will also discover fun games to play online.

Several years ago, on a family camping trip to Maine and back, we stopped in Vermont to visit the Ben & Jerry’s plant.  It was great fun!

Stephen Colbert has a flavor named after him called…”Americone Dream“- a sweet taste of liberty.

Ben & Jerry’s will send you their treats!  It’s called ICBM!  (Ice Cream By Mail)  I am sure they are on the “ecofriendly ” list of businesses to patronize.
